Objective & Purpose
The give our students the practical knowledge and hands on experience needed to begin careers as a Clinical Medical Assistant.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
The program is a comprehensive, across-the-board, study of duties and responsibilities expected of Clinical Medical Assistants with emphasis on the clinical duties students will be required to perform in the workplace rather than a pure focus on the clerical tasks (though those are covered as well). Clinical duties may include-
Taking and Recording Vitals
Recording Medical Histories
Preparing Patients for Examination
Assisting During Minor Surgery
Drawing Patient Blood and Collecting Specimens/Samples
Performing EKG
Glucose and Cholesterol Testing
Administering Medications
Taking Anthropocentric Measurements
Recording Temperatures
Urinary Catheterization (Male and Female)
Minor Medical Procedures Under Direction of Physicians, Nurses, and other Healthcare Professionals
Administrative Duties (Scheduling, Maintaining Medical Records, As Well As Billing & Coding For Insurance Purposes)

Module Content Synopsis
1. MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY
Students will cover basic medical terminology, term components such as root, suffix, prefix, etc; as well as combining forms. Anatomic structures and term references, symptomatic and diagnostic terms regarding diagnostic tests and procedures will also be covered in this section. This section will examine operative and therapeutic terms, review glossary of prefixes, suffixes, combined forms, abbreviations & symbols, and also commonly prescribed drugs.
2. MEDICAL ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTING
Through both theory and hands-on work, students will learn the flow of the medical office categorically. The approach of this module is to cement theory from the lectures into students minds by utilizing extensive hands-on exercises from topic to topic. Students will become familiar with navigation of workplace systems by utilizing digital tools that simulate the computer system of a medical office. From opening the calendar at the start of the day, producing paper-based records, as well as being able to seamlessly transition to electronic health records as many healthcare providers have started doing. Our students will be prepared for the modern medical office.
3. CLINICAL MEDICAL LABORATORY
The laboratory module will focus on both Electrocardiogram (EKG) as well as Phlebotomy
Electrocardiogram (EKG) Technician Laboratory - Students will learn the common disorders of the cardiovascular system, as well as diagnostic, and therapeutic procedures. Some topics covered in this section include:
heart rate calculation from EKG tracing
identifying artifacts from EKG tracing
resolution of artifacts from tracing
recording of EKG on patient
uploading of electronic medical records from EKG
verify leads recorded on EKG
mount completed EKG for patient chart
measure heart rhythm from EKG tracing
inspect waveforms of a cardiac cycle
measure heart conduction
identify the major classifications of arrhythmias from EKG
identify the major variances to waveforms related to ischemia, injury, or infarction

Phlebotomy Technician Laboratory - In this section of the course, students will study the fundamentals of laboratory procedures, as well as perform 45 live venipunctures (blood draws / ‘sticks’) under supervision in a controlled setting. Topics covered in this section include:
quality control and safety in labs
blood collection procedures
clinical chemistry, microbiology, and immunology
blood collection techniques, processing, safety, and compliance.
urinalysis specimen collection and drug testing
capillary blood draw using vacuum collection
familiarity with syringes
capillary skin puncture
butterfly needles
blood culture specimen collection
4. INTRO TO CLINICAL MEDICAL ASSISTING
This module will cover the fundamentals of clinical medical assisting. Subjects students will learn include:
nutrition and wellness
medical asepsis and infection
medical history and patient assessment
anthropometric measurements and vital signs
assisting in physical examination
sterilization and surgical instruments
assisting with minor office surgery
basics of pharmacology
preparing and administering medications
diagnostic imaging
medical office emergencies and disaster preparedness
dermatology, orthopedics, ophthalmology, and otolaryngology
pulmonary medicine
neurology, urology, and gastroenterology
endocrinology, pediatrics, and geriatrics
catheterization (male and female)
5. CAREER STRATEGIES
This module focuses on helping the students determine the best methods and strategies for both communicating the presence of their newly earned knowledge and skills and also identifying the best career direction given their current abilities and long term goals. Fundamental writing skills, guidelines for an effective interview, as well as discussion on government legislation and regulations as they apply to the medical assisting practice are all topics which will be touch upon in this module.
6. EXTERNSHIP
At this point in the program, students will put their newly learned skills and knowledge to work in the real world workplace. At the completion of this 2 month portion the program, our students will boast not only a possible 4 certifications, but over 160 hours of real world work experience. We encourage our students to make the best impression possible as this is their opportunity to make connections in the industry which can lead to referrals, recommendations, and even job offers.

In 2016-2019, 91% of our Clinical Medical Assistant Graduates passed the CMA Certification Exam on the first try. This is 11% higher than the national average. 82% of our CMA students found healthcare jobs following graduation.
